Uncertainty

Uncertainty is a model of E2Gov to assign the uncertainty of all data in Data Manager taking the US EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) methodology Data Attribute Rating System (DARS). The method was originally developed as a tool for the evaluation of emission inventories and modified under Emission Inventory Improvement Program (EIIP). The evaluation criteria, originally formulated for statistical sources, have been extended to the evaluation of point and mobile sources.

Subsequently the methodology was extended by Techne Consulting, as a part of the implementation of systems for managing the energy balance and more generally for evaluating energy and environmental data.

In particular, the model allows to:

  • Assign uncertainty of basic data
  • Assign uncertainty of emission factors
  • Calculate the uncertainty of emissions as a combination of basic data and emission factors uncertainties
  • Calculate the uncertainty of the energy balance items as a combination of uncertainties of the different variables that compose them

DARS method for data uncertainty determination, provides for the allocation of four different scores according to the following criteria:

  • Measurement/method
  • Source specificity
  • Spatial congruity
  • Temporal congruity

This structure is applied to basic data (and therefore to the energy data and to the data functional to the estimation of pollutants' emissions) and to the emission factors.
